Lent Day 7: Joy in suffering
"We are full of joy even when we suffer. We know that our suffering gives us the strength to go on. The strength to go on produces character. Character produces hope." Romans 5:3-4
No one wants to suffer. Sometimes someone will feel guilty for wrongdoings or the pain of abuse and rejection - and hurt themselves to relieve the pain inside. But that's not healthy or normal.
No one wants to suffer. Yet, we do. Being human means life is sometimes hard, whether because of our own bad decisions or someone else's wrong choices.
Jesus suffered for us. Handing that suffering over to God and trusting him to see us through brings hope to our hearts.
"We are full of joy in suffering," Paul writes to the church at Rome. How can that be? God, who knows the future when we are in the middle of trials and hurts, knows how to bring his supernatural peace to us. Right now. Right where we are.
In what ways are you suffering? Are you letting God use that to build strength, character, and hope? Or are you becoming bitter and making others around you miserable?
