Lent Day 25: Cautious promises
Whatever your lips utter
you must be sure to do,
because you made your vow freely
to the Lord your God
with your own mouth.
Deuteronomy 23:23
We can truly be incautious with our words. When we're in trouble, you - like I - may beg God's help and make promises about the future. Then we forget our part of the bargain (not that God needs us to negotiate with him) or get wrapped up in old habits. We hope God overlooks our foolishness as we renege on our word.
Have you "made deals" with God when you've been in a tight spot, vowing to serve him and obey him? Don't take your own words lightly! Scripture warns us to be careful with what we promise God.
Take some time to look through your journals or other reminders of God's faithfulness. How have you kept your resolutions or lived out your agreements when God has answered your frantic prayers?
God forgives us when we ask him, but he also takes note of our intentions and promises.
